Why VCU
Ranked among the top 50 public research universities by the National Science Foundation — placing VCU alongside institutions with 10× our tuition.
More academic pathways than any other university in Richmond — spanning engineering, health sciences, arts, business, and social work under one institution.
No isolated suburban campus here. VCU sits in the center of Virginia's capital city — your internships, research sites, and future employers are a walk away, not a drive.
Starting as the Medical College of Hampden-Sydney, VCU has nearly two centuries of institutional depth. The medical campus alone predates 90% of U.S. universities.
Unlike liberal arts competitors where research waits until grad school, VCU undergrads co-author papers, present at conferences, and lead lab work alongside faculty starting freshman year.
VCU's student body reflects Richmond itself — every background, every income level, every story. This isn't curated diversity. It's the real Richmond, and students say "people were so cool."
Our Story
In 1838, VCU began as the medical department of Hampden-Sydney College, eventually becoming the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) in 1854. For over a century, MCV trained physicians and researchers who shaped healthcare across the American South.
In 1917, the Richmond Professional Institute was founded to serve a different need — professional training in education, social work, and the arts. For fifty years, these two institutions grew independently, blocks apart in downtown Richmond.
Then, in 1968, the Virginia General Assembly merged them into Virginia Commonwealth University — creating something uncommon: a public research university with equal strength in health sciences and creative arts, rooted in an actual city rather than isolated from one.
Today, 30,000+ students call VCU home. They study in labs overlooking the James River, intern at hospitals and startups within walking distance, and graduate into careers shaped by real-world experience — not just classroom theory.
"I loved the city atmosphere… fell in love with Richmond. No regrets about choosing it."

VCU combines top-50 public research university status with public university pricing — a rare combination in Virginia. Unlike the University of Richmond (a private liberal arts institution), VCU offers 200+ programs, a research-driven mission, and direct integration with downtown Richmond's healthcare, tech, and creative sectors. The campus itself is the city, which means internships, clinical placements, and employer connections happen organically, not through isolated campus career fairs.
